Una ricostruzione meticolosa, documentatissima, e perfino divertente, dell'attività degli atleti professionisti: sprinters, mezzofondisti, maratoneti, che davano vita a sfide dirette che attiravano migliaia di spettatori e, soprattutto, di scommettitori. Gare soprattutto a handicap. Il sito più famoso era il Powderhall Granuds a Edinburgo. Dalle gare professionisti sono passati tutti o quasi i grandi del mezzofondo della seconda metà dell'Ottocento: il mitico indiano statunitense Louis Bennett conosciuto come "Deerfoot", Walter George, Walter Cummings, Alfred Shrubb, per non parlare degli sprinters. L'autore del libro riferisce, con dettagliatissima cura, questa attività dal 1870 al 1943. |

Che questo sia uno stupendo e unico libro è testimoniato dalle parole di due autori britannici - Peter Lovesey and Tom McNab - che diedero alle stampe, nel 1969, una pubblicazione da cui nessun ricercatore di atletica può prescindere: The guide to British track and field literature 1275 to 1968, una bibliografia poi arricchita qualche anno fa in nuova edizione edita dalla British Library. Scrivono Lovesey e McNab (che è stato il consulente storico per il film Momenti di Gloria): " Professional athletics is a twilight sport and Jamieson is the only writer in modern times to give it a detailed consideration. It is a painstaking rather than a brilliant book, but contains a wealth of original material. The main theme is the history of the famous Powderhall Stadium, but much information is given on pedestrianism in other part of Britain". |
