Latvijas Vieglatletikas Vesture 1897-1944

SPORT Track & Field
AUTORE Andris Stagis, member of the Association of Track and Field Statisticians since many years, was a good athlete between 1960 e 1970. His personal bests: Triple Jump 15.62, Long Jump 7.19. He was a reference for the results and the news from Latvia-ex USSR and then since the Independence in 1991 is the most important source for Latvian athletics.
EDITORE Jumava - Riga, 2016 - With the support of the International Athletic Foundation (I.A.F.)
CONTENUTO The book covers the history of the Latvian athletics from 1897 to 1944. Unfortunately the Latvian language is totally unknown for me, so, like a boy who cannot read, I look at the very nice collection of the old photos of the beginning of the years '900 and enjoy them. Also the statistics are an important contribution to the knowledge of athletics in that Country. The first Olympic Team competed in Paris 1924: at page 89 of the book there is the photo of the Latvian Delegation during the Opening Ceremony in the Colombes Stadium. The board  indicated "Lettonie" (at that time the Country was independent, founded in 1918 and recognized in 1921), in the front Gvido Jekals (sprinter and member of the 4x100) and holding the flag Arvids Kibilds, two of the best athletes of that years. In another photo (pag. 23) the delegation of Rossia (Russia) during the Opening Ceremony in Stockholm 1912. One of Latvian athlete was Alfreds Alslebens, 12th in the decathlon.
UNA FRASE
ACQUISIZIONE I have two copies: one received from the author and one from Pierre Weiss, Secretary of the I.A.F.
ANNOTAZIONI One more photo at page 280 with four great walkers of the early '30: the Swiss Arthur Schwab, the Latvian Janis Dalins, the Italian Ugo Frigerio and the British Alfred H Pope. Dalins was 2nd and Frigerio 3rd in the first Olympic 50 km Race Walk in Los Angeles '32. Latvia always as a great tradition in this discipline with 3 Olympic medals: Dalins silver (1932), Bubenko (1936) and Fadejevs (2000) bronze. With the color of the Soviet Union the Latvian born athlete Janis Lusis was one of the greatest javelin throwers in our sport: world record holder and Olympic Champion, and also silver medal for two centimetres in München '72.
